My users access and  modify records using direct table and query access. Can the toolkit be applied to my application without changing the user experience?

No. All access to data must be made using data driven forms to ensure the integrity of the data.  To minimize the impact on the users, you can configure the data entry forms to mimic most of the appearance of the table and query views.
